Covered Bridges Byway
Knowlton Covered Bridge

The Knowlton Covered
Bridge is the second longest covered bridge in Ohio, spanning 192 feet.
You can drive right up to it, but not across it. Foot traffic on
and below the bridge is welcome.
|
|
The Knowlton Covered Bridge is about 3/10 mile down a side road,
which is well marked, although not with an official
DOT-style roadsign. |
|

The bridge was restored in
1995, although its condition is a little more "rough" than many of the
other bridges I visited in the area.

The far end of the
Knowlton Bridge is a tangled mess of overgrown vegetation.
Somewhere in the middle, there's a trail, which used to be the old road.

Posts keep you from
driving across the bridge.

This is what it looks like
inside the bridge. Covered bridge experts will marvel at the
structure's combined use of two support methods: an arch, and the
Multiple Kingpost design. Covered bridge novices will say, "Wow,
it's cool in here."

|
Covered Bridges dot the landscape in this portion of Ohio.
With a little research and pre-trip planning, you can find quite
a few of them. Visit the
State of Ohio's DOT website for an interactive map that
shows you where to find them all. |
