The Great Cross, from below
One of the first things you'll notice as you visit the city is a
large cross on the waterfront, at the Mission of Nombre de Dios. It's
just one of many attractions on the Mission's grounds. During daylight
hours, you can walk around freely, and stand at the foot of the cross.

The Great Cross stands 208 feet tall, and
weighs 70 tons. The bottom 65 feet was filled with concrete, to
help strengthen it against hurricanes. The Mission's
website has more information. |

Statue of Father Francisco Lopez de Mendoza Grajales
Also at the mission, this statue of Father Francisco Lopez de Mendoza
Grajales. He was the chaplain that sailed with Menendez, and held the
first mass here in 1565. The statue was placed here, and dedicated,
nearly 400 years later.

Inside the Chapel of Our Lady of La Leche
As you walk around the grounds, stop at the Chapel of Our Lady of La
Leche. You'll probably find it unlocked, with a few candles burning
inside.

The Great Cross at Night
I returned to the mission just after sunset, but just before
the grounds closed. The Great Cross is illuminated at night, and as you
can see, is beautiful.
