Lakewood Park, Florida
Britton Hill - Florida's Highest Point
There aren't many points of interest in southern
Alabama or the north side of the Florida Panhandle. The one place
that truly has a claim to fame isn't all that interesting, but it's
still worth a stop: Britton Hill, the highest piece of real estate in
the entire state of Florida.

|
Lakewood Park is a few miles off US 331, one
of two main routes between Montgomery, Alabama and the Panama
City Beach/Destin area. As you drive through the tiny town of Paxton
(just south of the state line), you'll see signs that point the
way. Here's a link to a
Google Map, zoomed in on the actual park. |

A park seems out of place here, amongst the cow pastures, but Walton
County just had to do something to mark the only portion of the state
that still may be livable, after global warming melts the ice caps.

There it is. The highest point in the state of Florida, at 345
feet. The location is marked with a granite marker (practically a
tombstone), and surrounded by a few picnic tables and restroom.
|
|
At just 345 feet above sea level, Lakewood
Park on Britton Hill is the lowest high point in the United
States. In other words, every other state can boast a
higher hill than Britton Hill. Florida's nearest
competitor in this category is Delaware. |

|

That's it, the highest point in the state, over there in the corner.
Not as impressive as you may have imagined, huh? Especially in
a state where hurricanes have everyone thinking about higher ground.
|
|
With a state as flat as Florida, it may come
as a surprise that there's some competition for the "highest
point" designation. Technically, Lakewood Park is the
highest point in the state, but if you're only talking about the
peninsula, then you have to give a little credit to Iron
Mountain in Polk County, home to Bok Tower &
Sanctuary. Besides, any Floridian who lives south of
Ocala knows that the panhandle and peninsula are virtually two
different states, anyhow. |

|
Don't confuse Lakewood Park (a park near
Paxton, Florida) with the actual Florida town of Lakewood Park,
which is located along the east coast, in St. Lucie County. |
