Before you leave Lake Wales, there's one more unique (and free!)
attraction that's legendary in these parts: Spook Hill.

Spook Hill

Even harder to find than Bok Sanctuary. There
are signs all around town pointing to "Spook Hill" but some are
turned the wrong way, others are missing altogether. The easiest
way is to find the lake, then find the high school's outdoor
stadium. Take the road that circles behind the stadium, and keep
going. You'll eventually pass Spook Hill Elementary, and see the
sign for the hill. This
Google Map may help. |

Perhaps Spook Hill is located atop some mystical vortex. Maybe
the phenomenon is caused by the spirit of a Native American who
lingers in the area. Or maybe, it's all in your head. Here's how it
works: Pull your car up to the white line, painted on the pavement.
Put it in neutral, and let your foot off the gas. Your car will roll
backwards, uphill!

There are a few other tourist attractions in
Lake Wales. Be sure to check out the town's historic Main
Street, where you'll find a few restaurants and bars open after
hours. There's also a cultural center and museum housed in the
old train depot. |
