Sedona, Arizona
The Chapel of the
Holy Cross
Most of Sedona's
attractions are natural wonders, but there is one man-made stop you
should add to your list: The Chapel of the Holy Cross. You can
find it 3 miles south of the "Y" in Sedona on AZ Rte. 179. The
Chapel is at the end of Chapel Road.

The Chapel was dedicated
in 1957, some 25 years after artist/sculptor
Marguerite Brunswig Staude first began developing the design.
It took 18 months to build.

Inside, the chapel is
quite small, with just enough room for perhaps 100 people. Even
though there's no doubt this is a tourist attraction, the chapel is
still filled with a feeling of reverence.

While
the view out the front of the chapel is nice, I believe I found the best
view while climbing the stairs from the basement gift shop.
Windows in the stairwell open up to a view of the red rock mountain
directly behind the chapel.
Tip:
The Chapel of the Holy Cross is extremely visitor-friendly.
As you drive in, you'll find several people who will help you
find a parking space. The chapel is open to everyone --
you can have a seat inside or walk around, take pictures, etc.,
so long as you remain respectful of those who are visiting for
religious reasons. There is no admission fee, and I never
felt pressured by the staff to leave a donation. |
