Globe, Arizona

The town of Globe has a nice, walkable downtown district that has kept much of its old west feel.

The sign may say "New Tonto Hotel"... but it's definitely not new.  It's not even open anymore, but old storefronts like this help add to downtown Globe's character.

There are plenty of good Mexican restaurants in Globe, so I asked around for recommendations. It seemed everyone loved Chalo's on US 60 south/east of the overpass.  Chalo's is very casual and affordable, and during my visit, it was packed with locals.

Tip:

The Globe-Miami area is home to quite a few good antique stores.  I arrived after 5pm, and assumed everything would be closed, but I discovered the Globe Antique Mall on Mesquite Street was open a little later.  Good thing, too, since it was the staff that recommended Chalo's.

Once the setting sun convinces you it's time to call it a day, head east on US 60, then US 70.  Arizona Rte. 77 will turn off to the south, and take you to Tucson.  You can find a wide selection of good motels if you take Ina Road to I-10.  Staying here also allows quick and easy access to Saguaro National Park the next morning.

Tip:

Along Rte. 77 at mile marker 96.5, you'll pass a turnoff that leads to the Biosphere 2 Project. The futuristic glass pyramid and domed buildings are open for tours, although their website doesn't say how much a behind-the-scenes look will cost.  I drove by after dark, and discovered that the Biosphere can't be seen from the highway, or from Biosphere Road.
