Silverton, Colorado

If Durango seemed a little too polished and modern for a small western town, you're going to love Silverton.  The town has fewer people, fewer convenience stores, and fewer chain motels. Best of all, its downtown feels like it hasn't changed in the better part of a century.

Surprisingly, I discovered when I returned home that I didn't take a single picture of Silverton's downtown.  I guess I was too preoccupied with all the other pictures I took in the mountains above the town (which we'll cover on the next few pages). 

If you end up in Silverton around mid-day, it's likely you'll find the D&S train parked here, awaiting it's trip back to Durango.  Go ahead and drive out the gravel road to the edge of the tracks, if you want to take a few pictures by the locomotive.

Unfortunately there are some large high-voltage power lines next to the tracks, so you'll have to be a bit creative with your photos, to avoid them.
