Telluride, Colorado
Bridal Veil Falls

Telluride is a few miles off the main road (CO Rte. 145).  There's just one paved road in and out, which takes you into the valley.

To view Bridal Veil Falls, drive straight through Telluride.  The road eventually turns to dirt.  You'll find a wide parking area surrounded by private property.

When I first arrived in Telluride, the clouds were so thick and low I couldn't see the mountaintops above the town.  Same goes for the historic hydro-electric power plant at Bridal Veil Falls.

Here's a close-up look at the historic power plant and waterfalls, from the viewpoint.  (The falls looked better when I returned later.  Check out this view of Bridal Veil Falls, too!)

Bridal Veil Falls is Colorado's highest cascade, with a 365 foot drop.  The hydroelectric power plant at the top of the falls was built in the late 1800's to provide electricity to mining operations in the mountains above Telluride.  The building is now registered as a National Historic Landmark, but is on private property.

I was a bit dissatisfied with the view from the bottom of the valley, so for a few minutes I tried driving up the steep, one-lane dirt road that eventually leads to the waterfall.  I didn't go far, since the road was difficult to drive, and I wasn't sure exactly where the road would lead.  Besides, the dreary weather was ruining the view.

If you continued, you would reach the base of the falls after about 2 miles, and the top of the falls, in another 1/2 mile.  There is no parking at the top, though, so you should consider parking at the bottom, and hiking the rest of the way.

Several websites provide identical descriptions of the 4wd roads around Telluride.  Visittelluride.com is one of them.  There, you'll find more information on the road to Bridal Veil Falls, and the frightening Black Bear Pass Road, which ends at Bridal Veil Falls Road.  Black Bear is so narrow and steep, traffic is only allowed headed downhill.

We'll tackle another challenging 4wd road (leading to the ghost town of Tomboy) on the next page.
